Our Story

History

The Flying Stag Lodge was an early building in the village of Government Camp. It was originally built as a restaurant known as the Chili Bowl. Over the years the location hosted a number of restaurants until a fire condemned the facility.

In 1960, Pat Neth, saw the building, tracked down the owner, and called him up with an offer to purchase the place. The man, baffled that someone would want to buy it, said he’d meet her at the courthouse. Pat’s husband, not being privy to the arrangement, was at work, leaving Pat without a vehicle. She hoped on a bus and made her way to the courthouse, cash in hand.

Over many seasons, Pat’s husband Walt and his brothers, Fred, Otto and Ludwig, rebuilt the facility, which was used by their family, mazamas, Boy Scout Troops and company events over the next 50 years.

Sustainability

Sustainability and craftsmanship guided the 2013 renovations of the facility into a vacation rental and event space. It was an adventure finding sources of the lowest carbon footprint. From the lumber to build the dinner tables to the couch cushion fabric to the bed linen, we worked to find materials that were locally sourced or up-cycled.

Here is a listing of some of our favorite suppliers we connected with during the process:

Aesthetic

The space was designed and built following two main themes:

Lodge you can enjoy the timeless Cascadian theme as set by generations of mountain lodges.

Chalet creatively blends modern design with rustic, futuristic and place-based aesthetics.

Little Blue is your classic high capacity dorm style with basic amenities. Great for over flow guests if you rent the lodge or chalet, or for a cheap place to bring the whole crew for a night.
